Design and Build Custom Cutting Tools with Knight Carbide

In today’s precision metalworking industry, standard off-the-shelf cutting tools often lack the performance and longevity that modern machine shops demand. That’s why it just makes sense to design and build custom cutting tools.
The market increasingly requires complex machining processes for highly intricate products, while simultaneously raising the bar in manufacturing accuracy and repeatability. Thus, more than ever, the tools that make the products must be built with absolute precision and specially optimized for the job at hand. Enter Knight Carbide’s custom cutting tool design and manufacturing program.
Engineered and manufactured right here in Chesterfield Township, Michigan, our custom tooling services have provided machine shops throughout the nation with superior cutting performance since 1972. We specialize in custom carbide tools and inserts with CVD and PVD coatings, as well as ultra-high-strength PCD and CBN tooling options, produced to exacting +/- .0002″ tolerances. Our custom tooling solutions are designed to accommodate each customer’s unique machining processes more accurately and efficiently, ultimately facilitating better products and a smoother quality control process.
As an added advantage, every custom tool we manufacture becomes a permanent part of our archive. That means we can produce additional or replacement tooling at any time, offering the same price and turnaround as any standard tool.

High-Performance Custom Carbide Tools: Extreme Hardness and Wear Resistance
Carbide and Coatings
Knight Carbide offers cutting inserts for any application or tooling condition. With ANSI durability ratings ranging from C1 to C6, plus numerous ISO-rated grades of carbide, we can meet your specs. A range of carbide grades combined with multiple CVD and PVD coatings give us ample leeway to create the ideal cutting tool insert for maximum performance in any given application.
Custom Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) Cutting Tools
PCD cutting tools offer several advantages in various machining applications. Widely considered one of the hardest engineered materials in existence, PCD is a synthetic diamond product that is sintered together in the presence of a catalytic metal under extremely high pressure and temperatures.
Our custom PCD tooling offers unbeatable hardness for improved cutting performance and longer-lasting wear resistance. PCD cutting tools are especially well-suited for machining abrasive materials such as today’s engineering plastics, high-silicon aluminum alloys, and various non-ferrous metals. Additionally, PCD treatment gives the tool a low coefficient of friction which minimizes cutting forces, further optimizing the machining process while maximizing tool life.
Custom Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) Cutting Tools
Knight Carbide also designs and manufactures custom CBN cutting tools for a wide range of machining applications. Often considered to be the second-hardest man-made material, CBN tool coating is produced through the bonding of cubic boron nitride grains with ceramic material on the tool surface.
The resulting surface is considered to be as hard as diamond on the Mohs scale, which can offer substantially better wear resistance than standard coatings and treatments. Featuring excellent thermal stability, CBN is especially suitable for machining hardened steels and high-speed roughing of gray cast iron, the heat from which can quickly wear down standard cutting tools.
